SPJ-tastic!

Posted August 11, 2009 at 07:07 in

I just received some brilliant news, hot off the presses, that I would like to share with the Internet world…

The UF Society of Professional Journalists has been named the National SPJ Campus Chapter of the Year! Yippee!

We’re going to be recognized at the national conference at the end of the month.

I remember sitting in the Reitz Union a year ago, talking with the other officers about goals for SPJ. As the newly elected president, I wanted to push us to make a difference on campus and raise some eyebrows over at the SPJ headquarters.

This past year, we grew our membership to more than 100 members. We had a successful semester-long fundraiser that raked in hundreds of dollars. We planned and hosted three diversity events, two freedom of information events, a meeting on ethics, a campus-wide First Amendment Free Food Festival, five community service projects and about 11 other meetings/events that had a journalistic mission.

A big thanks to past and present leadership as well as our two advisers, professor Carlson and professor Foley!

Hello There

I have ridden in a helicopter that has flown over Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, walked through corn fields out in the rural outskirts of town and sat in on a High Springs police active-shooter training. I have conversed with many people, from circus performers and authors to hackers and the local homeless. And, believe it or not, I actually take joy in covering City Commission meetings.

I am a college journalist at the University of Florida, and I have worked for The Independent Florida Alligator and The North Florida Herald in High Springs, Fla. I now work at the local news station, WCJB TV20, as an associate producer, and ABC News On Campus as a reporter.

I am currently hunting for more internship experience and freelance opportunities.

I also love to collaborate on creative projects, whether it be with music, poetry or fiction. If you need help editing a chapter of your short story or need a violinist for that piece you’re planning to play, I’m your gal.
